Foundation can be so confusing ... we have already covered which formulations are best for specific skin types and all the formulations on the market so we will now discuss the levels of coverage.
Tints - Tints are very, very light coverage. They give you a hint or a tint of coverage. Tinted moisturizers come as a 2-in-1, your tint and your moisturizer in one. Tints are best for people who do not like the feel of foundation and are looking for a light coverage to slightly even their skin out.
Light Coverage - Light coverage, will as you have probably guessed (and if you haven't, we need to talk!) give you light coverage. It will definitely cover more than a tint, but it won't cover surface redness or any discolorations. A good example of Light Coverage is the Almay Smart Shade Makeup.
Medium Coverage - Most foundations are medium coverage. They will cover some surface redness and discoloration and give the appearnace of flawless skin. Use Medium Coverage if you have areas to hide or cover.
Full Coverage - Full coverage is for hiding serious redness, acne, scars, hyper-pigmentation etc. It is the most difficult to apply to make it appear natural. My favorite brand of full coverage foundation is Cover FX, it can cover up almost anything!
Sometimes you only need Full Coverage in certain areas of your face (your cheeks if you have rosacea for example, but you don't want a heavy look all over the rest of your face. Look for the word Buildable in the name, it means you can build up the coverage by apply more layers in certain spots. Lots of mineral powder foundations, cream-to-powder formulations are buildable as well as my favorite liquid foundation MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15.
What coverage do you like? What foundations do you love?
