I must be honest, I am a bit of a foundation snob. Partly because I am the color of paper, partly because I have sensitive skin, partly because I break out for any reason. That's not to say I don't like any drugstore foundations ... I often recommend Revlon ColorStay oil-free, L'Oreal True Match, Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse and Cover Girl Tru Blend. But it's just I don't personally wear them.

A few people have been asking me about the new Almay Smart Shade Makeup so I decided to brave the drugstore foundations and try it for myself. The claim is "this revolutionary colorless foundation contains microscopic color beads that are activated when you smooth it on—transforming into a shade that complements your skin tone". It is not a colorless foundation, it has little bubbles of color that pop and turn into color as you spread it on your face. I am not 100% sure, but I assume this is just for the experience, but it's pretty fun to watch it happen.

The first time I put on the foundation, I ended up putting on way too much because when the beads or bubble break, you suddenly have a lot of pigment! It was very blotchy and uneven, but it was a user error - I just had too much on. The second time I applied it, I put on waaaay less (like the size of a dime) and I warmed it up in my hands first. This seemed to spread the foundation out much more evenly.

I like that the foundation makes it simple for people to buy a good, oil-free light coverage foundation in the drugstore. I like that is isn't too pink or too yellow toned. I like that is is SPF 15, but I would be super happy with a higher SPF. I don't like it only comes in light to medium shades. Darker skinned people would like this option too - it's 2008 let's make products for ALL skin tones.

If you are looking for a light coverage foundation and you are a light to medium skin tone, then this might be the foundation for you. If you are looking for a medium coverage to cover up redness or breakouts, you may need to keep looking. Overall, I am very impressed by this drugstore foundation, I think it's a good option for normal to oily skin types and let's hope Almay makes it for darker skin tones.
